Book 2 in the Offbeat Crimes series

Relationship and communication issues plague Officer Vikash Soren, but those are nothing compared to facing stick-throwing tumbleweeds, pill bugs and…time travel?

Vikash Soren, the perfect police officer except for his odd paranormal ability, never seems to lose his temper. Always serene and competent, he’s taken on the role of mediator in a squad room full of misfits. But on the inside, he’s a mess. Unable to tell his police partner that he loves him, Vikash struggles silently, terrified of losing Kyle as a lover, partner and friend.

But life in the 77th Precinct doesn’t leave much room for internal reflection. A confrontation with a stick-throwing tumbleweed in Fairmount Park leads to bizarre consequences involving pill bugs, statues and…time travel? If Vikash manages to survive the week and stay in one point in time, he might be able to address normal things like relationship problems. He just needs Kyle to have a little more patience. Maybe a few centuries’ worth.

About Angel Martinez

The unlikely black sheep of an ivory tower intellectual family, Angel Martinez has managed to make her way through life reasonably unscathed. Despite a wildly misspent youth, she snagged a degree in English Lit, married once and did it right the first time, (same husband for almost twenty-four years) gave birth to one amazing son, (now in college) and realized at some point that she could get paid for writing.

Published since 2006, Angel's cynical heart cloaks a desperate romantic. You'll find drama and humor given equal weight in her writing and don't expect sad endings. Life is sad enough.

She currently lives in Delaware in a drinking town with a college problem and writes Science Fiction and Fantasy centered around gay heroes.

Although on the short side, these Offbeat Crime books have been great fun to read. This is only the second in the series, and there are already six of them out there. Lord, I do have to read more.

Angel Martinez writes with a stylish literacy that seems beyond the call of duty for a smile-inducing paranormal gay romance: “…her multiple legs moving in a swift glissando, like some hyperspeed alien tank tread.” Nice.

I enjoy the character of Vikash Soren, the mixed-race perfectionist, who’s relegation to Precinct 77 starts as punishment, but becomes something much warmer. Of course, with my thing for redheads, Kyle Monroe is delicious as Kash’s love interest. And how could I not love L.J., a character who is literally nothing more than an animated leather jacket (hence the initials)? Precinct 77 is about people with strange or damaged paranormal abilities, who become a tight-knit dysfunctional family charged with keeping a very well-described Philadelphia safe from unearthly creatures.

This book was exciting, a real page-turner, and while the mystery plot wasn’t particularly gripping in itself, the action as written by Martinez was. The quirky time-travel trope gave the author several chances to experiment with different settings, which not only made for fascinating variety, but allowed her to expand upon Vikash’s personality obliquely, as he reacts to these unfamiliar environments.

This is the kind of gay romance that I like best. Great characters, a careful depiction of setting that makes it real, and a central emotional story that focuses the entire narrative without derailing it.

I guess it’s on to book three. I’ll catch up eventually.

The Pill Bugs of Time Offbeat Crimes Book 2 edition by Angel Martinez Romance eBooks Reviews

Book 2 was better and I'm hooked!! To get this book from Cash PO V was smart...for me it told a different part of the story... The case was good as well...I'm also glad we're going to be seeing more of LJ as well... Off to book 3
Nicely done.
I am a fan of this series. Not sure how the author got into writing such quirky characters but bravo for doing something different.
This had more of a mystery feel to it.
I really enjoyed this book.
Priced okay.
I'm enjoying this series. I like the idea of things that seem nonthreatening turning out to be a big pain to handle. It's a fun series that has both light and a few darker moments. Also, goes to show that there's someone for everybody. ) If you like a quirky fun read with a nice portion of romance -- this one's for you!
This book directly continues from Lime Gelatin, and offers closure for our first series couple Kyle/Kash, but is told through Kash's eyes.

I liked the mystery/monster in this book more than book one, but I found Kash to be a harder POV to be in. Kyle is just so much more open, and as a queer person myself, I understand where Kash comes from, but at my age I'm more like Kyle. I'm out, and I mostly spent the novella waiting to see if Kash would have courage. Though I suspect people in Kash's situation might have the opposite view.

The time travel itself was cool. The radical future, the dangerous past were cool. Definitely not cookie cutter.
OMG!! Just finished this book and, as usual, Angel Martinez has completely wow'd me!! I was going to ask where does she think these things up when I read a review on sinfullymmbookreviews.blogspot.com
Now I get it! I truly enjoy reading her works. Every single thing I have read is unique, the style of writing is incredible and her characters completely fleshed out.
Love, Love, Love her books!
(Thank you Angel Martinez for the hours of wonder and entertainment you have given me. Looking forward to many, many more!!!)
Spoiler (sort of)... Kyle and Vikash get their HEA. In this second book, readers get Vikash's POV. (The first was in Kyle's POV.). It is an interesting switch and I enjoyed it. Kyle and Vikash are cute, sexy, quirky good guys, and I would like to read more with these two main characters.

However, despite the very good writing, this book just isn't for me. I prefer full length novels and paranormal isn't my thing. Time travel really isn't my thing and I had to push myself through the first half. The second half is better with more action, and solving the paranormal police matter.

Why 4.5 stars? Excellent writing. Creative. MCs to root for and want to see their HEA. Fun, quirky secondary characters. Edited very well. I'm undecided on the rest of the series, but the curiosity of wanting to learn more about the secondary characters is calling me. 😀 I will definitely check out this author's other books.
Okay, this novella fills in my last reading gap of Angel Martinez's humorous M/M UF/romance Offbeat Crimes series. There isn't exactly a *crime* this time, just a couple unusual creature-species' causing problems. The time-travel here takes an unusual form, being mainly only of the happening-in-the-mind variety, though certain dramatic events further along make it clear that pill bugs can do more than simply causing ~hallucinations~. Vikash's experiences in future and ~semi-spoiler~ distant past, while frightening in some ways (including the big one of "How can I can back?"), serve mainly to show him cultures lived with an openness and acceptance that he's convinced himself he can't have. I did get a leeetle tired of his paranoid pushing Kyle away, but I still found him a sympathetic character. The ending was a bit meh re. the biggest danger's actual resolution, but sweet re. the guys finally getting past misunderstanding and self-imposed obstacles. Another cute bit in this installment is the introduction of the fuzzy little oddity the squad christens "Tim". And AM's clever writing touches are throughout, in sentences that give you a quick grin.
I did catch a couple iffy wordings and one minor error this time, but that's still well within the range of what you might see in major-house printed works. Once again, it ends at 93%, and the excerpt this time is from the PREVIOUS novella (which I'd just read).
